My Virgin Post and the Legacy of James Brown

December 29, 2006

Everyone has to have a first time, and I suppose this is mine. Please be gentle.

So why am I keeping a blog? Like many aspects of my life, the genesis of this endeavor can be attrbituted to my wife, C. A couple months ago, I had written a little piece for the school newspaper (where my sons attend). C didn’t think it was “appropriate.” Yes, I agreed, my piece was a little “edgier” than most the entries, but I didn’t think it was out of line. We argued this point for a while, until she finally shouted at me in anger, “Get a blog!”

I have many friends who keep blogs, and the thing that seems most often to drive them crazy is not getting any kind of reaction to what they write. I suppose this will happen to me, as well. So, if you’re out there reading this, don’t be shy–let me know how you feel.

Of course, I have to give you something to react to, so I’ll start with this. Remember a couple years ago, when Ray Charles and Ronald Reagan died around the same time? Well, now history is repeating itself with the deaths of James Brown and Gerald Ford. Fortunately, this time around, no one is talking about putting GF on the ten dollar bill (if we had a seven dollar bill, GF might be just the guy for it), however, once again, the career of a great artist is being overshadowed by that of a lukewarm politician. (I’m not totally sure, but I think this is another example of The Man trying to keep me down.) James Brown contributed far more to this country than Gerald Ford. The Hardest Working Man in Show Business vs. The Man Who Pardoned The Biggest Criminal This Country Had Ever Seen Up To That Point–no contest. (Nixon, of course, would be regarded as the Biggest Criminal EVER, were it not for the present occupant of the White House.)

James Brown should lie in state in the rotunda of the capitol, while Gerald Ford should be buried beneath the 13th hole of some artificially created golf course in the middle of the California desert, where Republicans can come and worship at his Temple of Mediocrity.
